Individual Therapy

With over ten years of experience in the mental health field, I have learned that deep and lasting change is possible, that long-term issues can be resolved, and life can be better when we pay attention to ourselves in meaningful ways.I work well with people who believe their issues are related to their own patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours; people who believe their problems may have roots in their past, but continue to repeat old patterns despite wanting good things for themselves.I help people become aware of their wants, needs, and feelings, and how they may block themselves from improving their lives, reaching their goals, and creating lives worth living. I do not teach coping skills. With a look beyond just coping, I try to help people resolve the core emotional and relational causes of their anxiety and symptoms.I offer individual psychotherapy to adults (18+) for a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, physical symptoms, pain, grief, and relationship problems. Along with these issues, I have a special interest in working with people pleasers and self-critics.In my clinical work, I draw from a set of evidence-based psychodynamic and emotion-focused therapies known as Experiential Dynamic Therapies, including Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), Brief Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). I also have training and experience working in other relational, mindfulness, and attachment-based approaches, including Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).

My Approach

In my work, I use methods to make sure my clients and I are as effective together as possible. I use the following methods to increase and track effectiveness:Limited caseload
I take a limited number of cases so I can focus on effective treatment, professional development, and reviewing my sessions. My fees are set to help me take a smaller caseload so I can focus on being more effective.
Videotaped sessions (optional and not mandatory for treatment)
With permission, I videotape my sessions to review later to be sure we are on track and as effective as we can be in our work together. I store tapes securely and I delete tapes regularly. Videotaping allows me to spend extra time each week with my clients, which serves well to continuously develop my skills for current and future clients.
Consultation
I engage in regular supervision and consultation with master therapists. I have completed much of my training with global leaders in the mental health field, including Dr. Allan Abbass, Dr. Joel Town, Jon Frederickson, and with the Tavistock Relationships Clinic in London, UK.
Professional development
I engage in routine training and skill development activities for over 2 weeks each year (around the same amount of time people spend on their annual vacation).
